When the call for soldiers went out in the spring of 1917, several men from Nunda volunteered. Their departure was marked by a large gathering in the Village Square, followed by a parade of "motorcars" that took the young men to their reporting station in Rochester. The image above, taken by Fred Dake, recorded the event. This photograph appeared in the Nunda News June 16th, 1917 along with an article entitled "Nunda Boys Start for War." Click here for the list of Nunda men who went to War that day. The image also provides an interesting view of the Square in 1917. The Village Building with its clock and bell tower is to the left, the St. John's Hotel is in the center across the intersection, and the large Nunda House, (also known later as the Fox Hotel) is to the right. This photograph is in the Village Clerk's Office. We thank the Village of Nunda for the use of the photograph. For other veterans related material in the Village Clerk's Office, see the Nunda Area Veteran's Project Data Page. |
