On the weekend of April 1st vandals struck our historical Oakwood Cemetery. Eighty-seven gravestones were toppled or broken by five youths from the Nunda area. The damage was discovered on April 2nd, and on April 3rd members of the FRIENDS completed an inventory of the vandalized gravestones. Quick work on the part of the Nunda Police Department and the Livingston County Sheriffs Department led to the arrests of five juveniles on Thursday, April 5th. They ranged in age from 11 to 15. The process of repairing the Cemetery has begun. The Oakwood Cemetery Association has been in contact with the State Cemetery Board which will be sending officials to assess the damage and begin the restoration process. The FRIENDS will be assisting in the process. The FRIENDS would like to thank the local Police and Sheriff Departments and all the community members who participated in the investigation. We also thank the numerous individuals, families, and organizations who have offered support and assistance in the repair and restoration of Oakwood Cemetery. We hope you will join us in our continuing efforts to restore historical Oakwood Cemetery. We encourage you to become a member of our organization and greatly appreciate any donations made to our group or the Oakwood Cemetery Association. If you would like to make a donation, please make the check out to the "Friends of Nunda Cemeteries", and mail it to the Friends of Nunda Cemeteries, Box 22, Nunda NY 14517.
