Two images of the Carter Memorial GAR Building

This building was erected for the Grand Army of the Republic in Nunda by John J Carter. Carter, one of Nunda's first Civil War volunteers and winner of the Medal of Honor, made a modest fortune in the Pennsylvania oil fields after the War. The Memorial Building, with a Civil War era soldier standing guard over it, was finished in 1906. It is now the headquarters of the Seager Werner American Legion Post.

The image above was taken from a postcard postmarked 1909. We thank Karen Gibson Strang for sharing the postcard with us. The photograph below was taken sometime in the 1930's.

Here is a mystery - what happened to the two cannons that are shown in front of the building in the image below? If any visitors have information on these cannons, please let us know!
