The Friends held their annual spring meeting on Saturday, April 10th 2010 at the Nunda Historical Society building. We discussed future plans for Oakwood Cemetery including the new Price street addition. At the April meeting, Robert Weir and Ethel Foster were added as Directors to serve with Tom Cook, Joan Schumaker, Tom Byrnes, Charles Ostrum, and Phil Cox until the August meeting. Here are some recent Friends activities: • Successful work days resulted in cleaning Oakwood Cemetery in the village, Jones Cemetery on Creek Road, and the Col. Williams Family Cemetery on Short Tract Road. Thanks to all the groups and individuals who helped. Additional work days will be scheduled for other area cemeteries and we look forward to having increased community participation. Watch for our notices. • Weekly work sessions for Oakwood started May 13 and we will be meeting at 9 AM each Thursday. Join us to help straighten/clean stones, trim shrubs, or complete other projects. • Flowers are being planted in the entrance garden, in a large urn in the new section and in the old fountain at Oakwood. •A floral remembrance was placed on a grave in Oakwood. This individual lives in France and arrangements were made to place the flowers in May. • The Friends will be working with the Oakwood Cemetery Association to repair fallen/ broken stones at an average cost of $200 each. • Oakwood Cemetery has been included in recent tours by Keshequa students with Tom Cook as their guide. • A mailing to selected current and former Nunda residents, inviting them to become members of the Friends, has resulted in 54 members to date and donations of $1,572. Oakwood Cemetery and our other burial grounds have been a part of the Nunda community since the 1820's. They are the resting places for our family, friends, and forefathers as well as a significant historical resource. As with all historical resources, they must be cared for and protected! The monument in the upper left photo has been fixed, but there is much more to do! We need your help so join us! |
